Memory often feels unpredictable, but research suggests that what we remember may be more consistent than we realize. Experiments using repeated images and faces have shown that some images are naturally more memorable than others, and this memorability can be linked to heightened activity in visual areas of the brain that overlap with the hippocampus, a region essential for memory. Interestingly, researchers have found that people are not always very good at predicting what they themselves will remember, while computational models and AI can sometimes make surprisingly accurate predictions. This research has also been applied to art, where scientists found that larger and more interesting paintings tended to be remembered better, while factors such as beauty, emotion, familiarity, color, and general content did not necessarily determine memorability. These findings demonstrate how experimental research and computational tools can help scientists understand the relationship between the mind and the brain, while also raising new questions about how everyday experiences influence memory. For example, future research could explore whether a person’s lifestyle, such as being more physically active or mentally engaged, affects how well they form and retain memories.
